The mere 3-year-old hotel resides in the gorgeous countryside slopes of Mount Hengill, near Thingvellir National Park with a breathtaking view of Lake Thingvallavatn. With the eco-friendly and sustainability focus, Ion Hotel uses innovative materials and incorporates a minimal focus on Iceland’s natural features into the hotel’s design. 

The Ion’s exterior mnmMOD prefabricated panels system allows a maximized energy efficient operation without forfeiting its aesthetic beauty. What goes on inside the hotel is another story. Thanks to the countless natural hot springs surrounding the hotel, the hotel is able to provide clean, energy-efficient geothermal heating and hot water. Extensive use of large bay windows throughout the building allows plenty of natural light in and provides guests unobstructed views of the country side. 

The Ion is an avid believer of “re-cycle, re-use, and reduce”. From tables, to candle holders, to various furnishings - materials such as driftwood, lava and recycled rubber are all over the establishment. The blankets, towels, linens, blankets and bathrobes are all local Icelandic Items. Guests can enjoy Icelandic beer at The Northern Lights Lounge and as an added compliment to the hotel; a beautifully crafted naturally heated spa pool is situated beneath the hotel with a priceless view of Iceland’s landscape.
